Judy McMahon, founder of The Hungry Ear program, had listened to NPR's SELECTED SHORTS out of New York City, for several years, and enjoyed it very much. She thought a program similar to it could be possible in Binghamton. After all, people always love a good story and there are so many good short stories to be read. As a local actress and director, she knew she would have access to the many talented actors in the area. She set about presenting a proposal to the Broome County Public Library.
It was accepted in conjunction with a summer event publicizing the library garden. Audience and readers responded favorably and it was extended into the fall, usually the last Monday of each month. Attendance has grown. The program is an hour in length, from 5:30 to 6:30 - cocktail time for the mind, one might say.
Judy chooses most of the stories but is always interested in hearing ideas from her friends and colleagues. Sometimes the season begs to have stories read appropriate to its theme. Halloween, Christmas, St. Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day present wonderful opportunities to mine the field of stories about each of them.
After its winter break, The Hungry Ear returns with themes of love and romance. The program is free and open to the public within the beautiful walls of the library on Court Street, downtown Binghamton, in the Exhibit Room, second floor. Come one, come all and be touched, amused, and delighted.

All the best, Judy McMahon
