The Hungry Ear, a program celebrating its fourth season, continues short stories for adults as read by local actors!

The Hungry Ear, celebrating the art of the short story, presents an exciting program of Civil War stories and legends will be presented by The Hungry Ear, the library program celebrating the art of the short story.

Focus will be on Women at the Front, Belle Boyd, the legendary Confederate spy, and The White Feather, by T. B. Aldrich.

Carolyn Christy-Boyden and Mickey Ray will be the readers. All together, these colorful selections will bring to life some of the characters involved in that epic struggle.

Judy McMahon, founder of THE HUNGRY EAR program, had listened to NPR's SELECTED SHORTS out of New York City, for several years, and enjoyed it very much.  She thought a program similar to it could be possible in Binghamton. After all, people always love a good story and there are so many good short stories to be read. As a local actress and director, she knew she would have access to the many talented actors in the area. She set about presenting a proposal to the Broome County Public Library.

It was accepted in conjunction with a summer event publicizing the library garden.  Audience and readers responded favorably and it was extended into the fall, usually the last Monday of each month.  Attendance has grown.  The program is an hour in length, from 5:30 to 6:30 - cocktail time for the mind, one might say.

Judy chooses most of the stories but is always interested in hearing ideas from her friends and colleagues. Sometimes the season begs to have stories read appropriate to its theme.  Halloween, Christmas, St. Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day present wonderful opportunities to mine the field of stories about each of them.

After its winter break, The Hungry Ear returns with themes of love and romance. The program is free and open to the public within the beautiful walls of the library on Court Street, downtown Binghamton, in the Exhibit Room, second floor. Come one, come all and be touched, amused, and delighted.

Watch this page for future announcements and programs!

All the best,

Judy McMahon

Would you like to add your show dates to Curtains Up?

Submit your advertisement INFORMATION (flyer or poster) containing the name of your Theater Group, the name of the show and your director.

Include the Date: Time, Location, & Ticket Prices no later than two weeks before your opening night. (I will copy/paste your info, so if it's in error it will be yours, not mine.)

You are also welcomed to merely send a basic announcement and I'll put that up along with a LINK to your website for further details.

This is a FREE service and is done when I have the time to do it, so I cannot make guarantees as to having your announcements up in time. Accuracy of show dates and times will be copy/pasted, so it is up to you to get them right!

All professional and non-professional theater groups on my Playgroups page list are welcomed to advertise.

If you are NOT on that page and would like to be, and if your group lies within 2 1/2 hours of Binghamton by car, write to me and send me your info!

Shows that share the same dates will be listed alphabetically by Theater Group, excepting the word “the”.

“The Brighton Players”, for example, would go before “Salisbury Community Theater”.

EXCEPTION

If shows share ‘split’ dates, the show that goes up first, will be listed ahead of the other.
