For over forty years, Richard has portrayed numerous characters
in both professional and community theatre.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Richard did not begin acting until he auditioned for the
Senior Play at his high school, and won the role of Mr. Babcock in Auntie
Mame. Later that year he was cast as Jud Fry in Oklahoma!, a role
that explored his dramatic abilities over comedy. In college he joined the
campus theater group and played such parts as The Common Man in A Man For All
Seasons, The Boy's Father in The Fantasticks (with Harry Chapin's
brother, Tom, as the Girl's Father), and Falstaff in Henry IV.
After earning his Master's Degree in English, Richard turned to
professional theater and joined the Arena Players in their production of
Hamlet, in which he played four distinct parts. The reviewer for The New
York Times admitted that he did not realize these characters were portrayed by
the same person until he checked the playbill. One can only imagine Richard's
feeling of accomplishment when he read the review. He also played Cohn in
Knock Knock with the late Steve Susskind, and Jeeter Lester in Tobacco
Road, with Edie Falco's mom Judy, as his long-suffering wife Ada.
In 1981 Richard moved to the Binghamton area and joined the Summer Savoyards, trying his hand at Gilbert and Sullivan. He also served as Chairman of the Board for that organization. The BC Pops cast him in one of his favorite roles, Alfred Doolittle in My Fair Lady, the first of many productions he shared with his good friend Mickey Ray.
Richard has also performed with Theatricks By Starlight, Jan De Angelo
Productions, Tongue N Cheek Productions, and The Cider Mill. Other roles include
the Gravedigger in Hamlet, Renfield in Dracula, Moonface Martin in
Anything Goes, Major-General Stanley in The Pirates of Penzance,
Ko-Ko in The Mikado, Lenny Ganz in Rumors, Doctor Einstein in
Arsenic and Old Lace, Caesar Rodney in 1776, Milt Fields in
Laughter on the 23rd Floor, Schwartz in The Front Page and most
recently, Lazar Wolf in Fiddler on the Roof at The Cider Mill.
